On the road ... almost

You might be able to follow The Edge of Nowhere's trip to Norway on our companion blog: Anderson Adventures.

Wha ?!?

And I quote the Book Standard chart alert: "The $2 million advance that Little, Brown paid Elizabeth Kostova for her debut novel, The Historian, begins to pay off as the historical thriller about a hunt for the real-life Dracula debuts at No. 1 on the Fiction Chart: The novel sold 70,000 units its first week. Kostova has yet to make any TV appearances—the first is scheduled for Good Morning America on June 28—but she has been the beneficiary of positive press, both in key advance-review publications like Kirkus Reviews and mainstream outlets like USA Today, Entertainment Weekly and Newsweek. The Historian is likely to have a long run as a bestseller, touted as it has been as the next, next, next Da Vinci Code, and with a movie adaptation already in the works: Sony Pictures Entertainment bought the rights for a reported $1.5 million."

So that's $3.5 million, in advances and rights, not counting what's coming from sales? Yowsa. Makes me want to end my vacation and get back to work on my novels.

But happily, it's only barely begun -- my vacation, that is. I've taken June off from writing, as my two regular readers already know -- and we're taking off Monday for three weeks in Norway. So consider the Edge of Nowhere officially on hiatus until the weekend of July 17. The dogs are lucky because the house-sitters are ready to take over, so away we go. Full reports -- or at least partial or sketchy reports and perhaps a few photos -- to come. maybe even from on the road, if we can find one of them internet cafes….

Later!

A bit of family history

My grandfather Ole Anderson sailed from Norway on the ship Romeo, part of the Wilson line, from Oslo to Kristiansund (to pick up more passengers) then on to Hull on the east coast of England, leaving Oslo on May 4, 1906, for the 42 hour sail to Hull, England, where he likely took a train across England to Liverpool to catch a ship for New York (my research continues to seek/find that ship's name, passenger lists, etc -- at least we now know it was May of 1906). At Ellis Island, he met a Lutheran minister who was sponsoring his journey and likely went by train to the Twin Cities via Chicago, and then on eventually to Battle Lake, Minnesota, where he first settled. He was 20 years old when he left Lensebraten, the family farm a bit northeast of Sarpsborg, Norway, for America. I'll be at Lensebraten next Wednesday.

Good title?

Here's a good title for something: "Stream of Consequences."

Swimmin pools, no movie stars

Ah, summer. Just back from the swimming pool, where Reade and I bobbed and tossed a tennis ball back and forth for an hour as Kristen worked and Connor attended a friend's birthday party. No writing, no work, nothing getting done but re-lax-ation.

And that's OK. And now Kristen's home from work, the sun is going down and she wants to go for a walk with the dogs. I'm out of here. Later!

Super busy

We've been surprisingly busy these first two weeks of June. Three dog shows. Reade's been babysitting nearly every day. Reade had a violin recital, and two dance recitals, and a dress rehersal, and three extra last-minute practices, and a day of photos. Connor took his girlfriend and his mom and her parents to see Nickle Creek. It's been raining a lot. Just too busy to sit here even for a short post. And now I see by the clock I'm almost running late for work. See ya!

Summer and the living is easy

Ah yes, summertime. Kids are out of school now. Kristen's off work. I'm still toiling in the cubicle farm, of course, but the sunny warm days and the late light nights and the pool being open one's thoughts -- my thoughts -- aren't trending towards writing or literature or even reading. We saw Star Wars again Thursday night, both kids have been having sleep overs and then we've just an amazing amount of rain the past 36 hours and today and tomorrow we went down to a dog show in Longmont. So -- no writing. Just summer. In fact, now I'm going to go check on some bike racing reports (tomorrow is the US pro championships in Philly) and the Daphne Libre mini stage race starts in France -- Lance is back on the bike, as is Levi Leipheimer and my favorite Norwegian racer Thor Hushvod. Then it's time to watch The Prisoner. later

"We make it up as we go along. Identity theory: a literary website, sort of. One I've been checking out a bit lately.
